Purification of Drinking Water

Our body requires the maintenance of a water-balance because it is primarily composed of water. The most significant aspect of human lives is water, yet we ignore it because we do not know how important it is. We need water for good health. It is essential for numerous bodily processes, such as supplying nutrition to cells, eliminating waste, protecting joints and organs, and regulating body temperature. Nonetheless, noxious concentrations of dangerous bacteria and substances occasionally pollute community drinking water. At the water's source, such as underground or water from lakes/wells or rivers, or as the water moves through the pipeline, bacteria and pollutants can enter the water.

2. Hydrogen and oxygen are the components of pure ordinary water. Pure water is characterized differently by different people in different scenario. As such Bacteriologists describe "pure water" as a disinfected liquid empty of any living microorganisms. On the other hand a chemist might define “pure water” which have no organic, gaseous, or mineral contaminants. Consequently, it seems likely that "pure water" as defined here can only be found in labs and under ideal circumstances. With respect to our usual drinking water there are three main elements of water quality parameters namely physical, chemical, and biological that are used to gauge the quality of the drinking water. Colour, taste, flavour, temperature, turbidity or cloudiness, solids, and electrical conductivity are among the physical characteristics. Fluoride, salt, sulphate, nitrate, iron, zinc, mercury, lead, arsenic, chloride, and cyanide are among the water’s chemical contaminants.

3. Water is a transparent liquid numerous minerals are naturally present in water. Nevertheless, the following eight factors must be taken into account when measuring the quality of water:
  • The ambient temperature (the temperature of the air surrounding a component)
  • Electrical conductivity (Water's ability to carry electrical current)
  • Clarity (under water visibility)
  • Acidity or pH level (Normal drinking water has a pH of seven, while alkaline water usually has a pH of eight or nine)
  • Degree of hardness (The presence of bicarbonates, sulphates, and chlorides of calcium and magnesium)
  • Chlorine demand of water (Generally an addition to prevent contamination with germs)
  • Dissolved oxygen, and
  • BOD - Biological oxygen demand (Water that has a low BOD is typically purer since less oxygen is being extracted from it)
4. Contaminated drinking water can be of different kinds, however following are the common type of contamination:

(a) Cloudy-water (turbidity): The presence of minerals causes the water to become cloudy.

(b) Discoloured water: There is no colour in pure water. Generally, water becomes discoloured when iron or magnesium levels are too high.

(c) Smell in water: In general, drinking water is odourless and have no smell. If smell is found in drinking water you should have your water analysed since it could be harmful to the health.

(d) Strange taste: There are several factors that affect the flavour of drinking water, including variations in salinity, pH (reading of 7.0, this means that the water is neutral), and mineral content due to dissolved gases, and inorganic compounds. Most people believe that rather than tasting neutral, acidic water (pH less than 7) tastes slightly sour. If the flavour of your water is bitter, it may be because your water is alkaline i.e. having pH more than 7.

5. It is a good idea to get your water tested and arrange a water filter if you are worried about the quality of your water or if you see any contamination indicators. Water that you fear may be contaminated should always be discarded since the substances in it may be dangerous for health. A water filter is a device used to filter drinking water. It works by forcing water through a barrier to capture contaminants. Only filtered water is released by this device through Filtration Media or Filter Cartridges to pass through the barrier. Water filters usually apply filtration media or filter cartridges to remove certain wastes and contaminants.

6. While there are many other ways to purify water, some of the more popular techniques include distillation, boiling, filtration, UV treatment, chlorination, and reverse osmosis. People have been using boiling water for ages all across the world. Boiling water is a cheap and simple process that may be done without any special equipment or chemicals. Boiling water, however, only gets rid of microorganisms that are sensitive to heat. Toxic substances including pesticides, heavy metals, and fluoride cannot be eliminated by it. Nowadays, water is filtered to remove toxins and pollutants by passing it through a material that either collects or captures them. Water containing elements, silt, bacteria, viruses, and chemicals can all be eliminated with filtration. Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration is being applied commercially for providing drinking water at large due to its affordability while Mineral Water plants have less commercial popularity as such it originates from a number of places, such as protected aquifers and underground springs. Benefits from mineral water can differ based on the minerals that are in the water. Mineral water might be a better choice for a solution to get healthier. However, Reverse Osmosis (RO) water might be the best option for seeking a way to lower your risk of illness.

7. It is commonly accepted that having minerals in water is beneficial if ingested in the right quantities, they offer a number of health advantages. Minerals are necessary for the human body to perform its fundamental tasks. Water filtration ensures that the necessary minerals are present in drinking water while eliminating undesirable minerals and bleaching hazardous contaminants. A quick and easy way to help your family's health is to filter your water. Steer clear of needless chemical use, enhance flavour, and perhaps even contribute to environmental preservation. Water filtration is the key to obtaining clean water, which is vital to our health.

8. It is recommended that you take into consideration a filtration system that can tackle numerous difficulties; this is both manageable and cost-effective, even though there are many different types of water filtration systems available. Reverse osmosis filtration is a good choice because it is more efficient than other techniques like deionization and distillation at removing chemical pollutants from water. The method known as reverse osmosis (RO) adjusts pure water. RO water is good for health because it does not contain lead and other bad stuff. Using this technology, water is purified of large particles, microorganisms, and undesirable chemicals or ions.

9. Domestic reverse osmosis or commercial both water filtration devices/plants are modern system to have the purest and safest drinking water. Beneficial minerals including calcium, potassium, and magnesium are eliminated by RO systems. The water may turn acidic if certain minerals are absent. Consequently, the remineralizer in the RO plant filtration system refills the minerals your body needs and raises the pH of the drinking water. The following are some more facets of the significance of reverse osmosis plants:
  1. This facility produces high-quality water by purifying it to a level of 99%.
  2. This plant is environmentally friendly because it uses less energy.
  3. This plant requires little upkeep and is dependable and long-lasting.
  4. All things considered, pollution and water scarcity can be addressed with a RO plant.
